Art Deco 935 Silver Pearl Necklace – H.A.K., circa 1925

A wonderfully detailed example of early 20th-century European jewelry, this dramatic necklace dates to approximately 1925–1930 and is most likely German in origin.

The sculptural centerpiece is crafted in 935 silver, a higher silver fineness than traditional sterling, with intricate openwork flowers, leaves and geometric detailing characteristic of the transition from late Jugendstil into the Art Deco period. Numerous hand-set rose cut faceted metallic accents (likely pyrite) catch the light across the design, while a luminous cream-colored pearl provides an elegant focal point at the center.

This pearl has not been sent to a laboratory for testing. While the time period could indicate a natural pearl was used, at the same time, Akoya cultured pearls were becoming plentiful in the European market.

The articulated side elements and patterned chain continue the decorative work beyond the centerpiece, giving the necklace a remarkably finished appearance from every angle. The silver has developed a beautiful natural patina that emphasizes the depth and texture of the design.

The piece is marked “935” and “H.A.K.” The H.A.K. mark may be associated with a Pforzheim, Germany jewelry manufacturer, although further research would be required for definitive attribution.
